Private Tour vs Group Tour

How to choose the right kind of Bali day tour for your budget, your pace and your travel style.

When you start planning day trips in Bali, you'll quickly face a choice: join a shared group tour, or book a private one just for your party. Both can be great — it really depends on what you value most. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.

What's the difference?

A group tour puts you on a bus or minivan with other travellers, following a fixed itinerary and schedule. A private tour is exclusively for your group — you get your own car and driver-guide, and the day is built around you. The prices can be closer than you'd think once you're travelling as a pair or a small group.

Cost

Group tours usually advertise the lowest per-person headline price, which makes them attractive for solo travellers on a tight budget. But private tours are priced per car or by group size, so the more people you have, the lower the cost each — and for a couple or a family, a private tour is often only slightly more than buying several group-tour seats. On our tours, for example, per-person rates drop noticeably as your group grows, because the car cost is shared.

Flexibility

This is where private tours shine. Want to linger at a viewpoint, skip a shopping stop, start earlier to beat the crowds, or add a waterfall on a whim? On a private tour, you can. Group tours run to a set timetable, so you move when the group moves — which can mean rushing the places you love and waiting at the ones you don't.

Comfort and pace

With a private tour you're not waiting for a full bus to reassemble at every stop, and you set the air-con, the music and the rest breaks. Families with young children, older travellers, and anyone who values a relaxed pace tend to strongly prefer private. You also get your guide's full attention for questions and recommendations.

The experience

A shared tour can be sociable and a nice way to meet people. But a private driver-guide can tailor the story of the day to your interests, take you to quieter spots, and adapt on the fly — a local friend showing you around, rather than a script. There are no forced commission stops, which are common on cheaper group tours.

When a group tour makes sense

If you're travelling solo, watching every rupiah, and happy to follow a fixed schedule, a group tour is a perfectly good, economical choice. The social side can be a real plus too.

When to choose private

If you're a couple, a family or a group of friends, want flexibility, value comfort, or simply want the day to revolve around you, private is usually the better experience — and often better value than it first appears. Every one of our tour packages is 100% private, with hotel pickup and an English-speaking driver-guide included, and we're always happy to customise the route.
